Mayan-Culture

You will be inspired by Ruben Dario Gomez Gonzalez as he presents the Mayan culture through arts and customs. Ruben will give a brief introduction to the country of Guatemala and the origin of the Maya. He will share some of the ancient Mayan customs as they continue to be practiced today by sharing a brief slide show of “El Festival de Barriletes Gigantes,” and an explanation of the significance of this event. He will also demonstrate the creation of textiles using a backstrap loom and display examples of some of the 140 native dress patterns, giving an explanation of the significance of each pattern.

Ruben Dario Gomez Gonzalez was born in the Highlands of Guatemala in the small town of Chichicastenango. At the age of 12 he moved to Guatemala City. With only three years of formal education, he has taught himself Qichean, a Mayan dialect, English, Italian, and some Japanese. He has worked as an archaeological tour guide in Guatemala for over 20 years. He has presented in Rome, the Simi Valley in California, at Rutgers University in New Jersey, and at the University of Houston.
