MSPP is excited to announce a partnership with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) and the student chapter of EWB at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville (SIUE). EWB will help MSPP with Phase II of our water program. The community has asked for help with a water pump project. During the dry season all but one of the wells in community completely dry up. This forces the women to stand in line at the one functioning well for long hours and sometimes into the night to gather drinking water for their families. The pump project will allow them to pump water from one of two water sources to a holding tank that will be centrally located in the community, allowing everyone in the community easier access to water.
In early May 2013, several of the engineering students from SIUE travelled with our president to meet with the families in Virginia. Shortly after our return to the US, we received final approval of our partnership. Our first official MSPP/EWB/SIUE trip is scheduled for January 2014. At that time, we will be gathering important data, surveying and testing water samples. Stay tuned for further information as the project progresses.
